Parent's Guide

Noah
Dear Mom and Dad,

We applaud you for following Proverbs 22:6 by helping your child understand the Bible. Below, you will find some Teaching Tools to guide you in showing your child the truths of God’s Word and in helping your child apply them in his or her life.

Ages 3 to 6 - Use the teaching tools below

Ages 7 to 10

What we will learn
• God provides for His people.
• They meaning of the words flood and ark.

LEARN ABOUT NOAH

In this section, help your child understand why Noah was so important in the plan of God. God wanted Noah to save some of the animals and people He had made by building a large boat, or an ark, that would keep them from drowning in a great flood which He would send. (Taken from Genesis 6:1-9:17)

But Why?

Teaching Tool #1:
Explain to your child that God made everything. Have your child name family members, animals, and friends–then tell your child that God made each one.

But Why?

Teaching Tool #2:
When your child wonders what a flood is and why God would send a flood, read to him the following reason and explain to him that a flood is when it rains so much that no one can swim away. Have your child wiggle his fingers to show how rain falls. Earth was no longer the perfect place that God wanted it to be. This was because many of God’s people living on Earth forgot about Him. This made God very sad.

But Why?

Teaching Tool #3:
When your child wonders why God wanted to destroy everyone but Noah, read to him the following reason. Noah was the only man on Earth who loved God and did what God asked him to do. So God told Noah to build a boat big enough to hold two of every kind of animal and all of Noah’s family. Then when it rained, Noah and his family–and the animals–would be safe.

Teaching Tool #4:
Tell your child that you love him and so does God. Help them think of ways God has showed them his love by keeping them safe.

Learning Concepts and Unfamiliar Words

Not only has your child learned a fundamental truth about God’s character (that He always provides for His people), but he or she has also learned the meanings of the following words: flood and ark. Your child has also had a chance to recall names of friends, family members, and different kinds of animals.

Parents' Guide
Dear Mom and Dad,

If you have children that are older (ages 7 to 10) and may enjoy learning more about Noah, help him to understand the following questions. You may want to help your child write his answers in a journal.

What we will learn
• God loves us no matter what.
• The meaning of the word faith.

HOW TO APPLY WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT NOAH

  • Noah built the boat–before the flood came. He trusted God that it would come, and he worked hard to finish the boat before the rain came.

Journal: What has God told you to do? Maybe He has told you to listen to your parents and do the chores they give you. Maybe God wants you not to do what your friends do when your parents tell you it will hurt you: that requires trust in your parents just like Noah had trust in God. Write about something you believe God wants you to do this week.

    • Noah stuck to his goal even though it took him a long time to see the results and to experience God’s victory.

Journal: Have you ever tried to do something that didn’t work right away? Maybe you tried to sell lemonade, but nobody bought any. Maybe you tried to get an "A" on a test, but you got a "B" instead. What did you do when what you wanted didn’t happen as quickly or as easily as you wanted it to happen? Write about it. Then, remember: if you have a task to complete that isn’t easy, stick to it. As long as it’s a worthy goal in God’s eyes, then He will help you accomplish it eventually.

    • The Good Things About Noah and The Good Things He Did:
    • He was the only man who followed God during his day.
    • He was a man who always did as God wanted him to do and a man who waited on God.
    • He was the first major shipbuilder in history.

Journal: All of our strengths (good things about us) and accomplishments (good things we do) are given to us by God. We don’t earn them or deserve them; He gives them to us only because He loves us. What are your strengths and some of your most recent accomplishments? Write about some of them, and thank God for helping you do well.

      Life Lessons from Noah:

    • God keeps His promises.
    • God protects us.
    • Obeying God takes time–it’s not something you do once and then it’s done forever. We must choose to obey, or do what God wants us to do, every single day.

Journal: No matter what you do or don’t do, God will always love you. He can not change. He will always forgive you when you ask Him to if you are really sorry and if you really want to change. Is there anything for which you want God to forgive you? Write a prayer to Him and let Him know how you feel. Ask God to help you live in a way that shows you love Him.

Journal: Can you remember an example of when God protected you?

Journal: Obedience–doing what God and your parents, teachers, and other leaders tell you to do–is not a one-time thing. It is something you must promise and ask God to help you do every single day–no matter what. How can you obey your parents or teachers today?

Memory Verse: "Noah did everything as God commanded him" (Genesis 6:22).
  • Remember Rhyme

    Noah built a boat

Just as God told him to,

    He knew he would float

    Until the rain was through.

    In that boat, Noah led

    Animals two by two–

God saved them like He said

    He was going to do.

    Noah’s family also went

    Inside the boat to stay

Until the rainbow had been sent

And the rain was cleared away.

    Learning Concepts and Unfamiliar Words

Not only has your child learned a fundamental truth about God’s character (that He always provides for His people), but he or she has also learned the meanings of the following words: strength and accomplishment. Your child has also had a chance to apply biblical truths to his life and remember the story of Noah through Scripture and song.
