Parent's Guide

David & Goliath

Dear Mom and Dad,

We applaud you for following Proverbs 22:6 by helping your child understand the Bible. Below, you will find some Teaching Tools to guide you in showing your child the truths of God’s Word and in helping your child apply them in his life.

Ages 3 to 6
Even if your children are older than six, we encourage you to lead them through this material before moving on to the content for their age group.

Ages 7 to 10

What we will learn
• God is trustworthy.
• They meaning of the word faithful.

LEARN ABOUT DAVID

In this section, help your child understand why David was so important in the plan of God. David’s story against Goliath is an example that shows how faithful God is to help us when we ask. You can always trust God because He always does what He says He will do.

But Why?

Teaching Tool #1:
When your child wonders why David was chosen to fight Goliath, explain that . . . David told the king of his country that he could do it. Help your child recall things that he can do; maybe he can tie his shoe or brush his teeth. Tell him to show you how he does it.

But Why?

Teaching Tool #2:
When your child wonders how David knew he could fight, explain that . . . David knew he could fight Goliath because God would help him. God had helped him fight against lions and bears, so he knew God would help him fight the giant, too. Pray with your child, thanking God for helping your child do many things. (Use examples you named in Teaching Tool #1.)

Teaching Tool #3:
Tell your child that God loves him and wants to be his friend. God is always ready to help his friends–He never leaves them. If your child would like to know more about how he can, through Jesus, be a friend of God, help him read through the salvation message.

Learning Concepts and Unfamiliar Words

Not only has your child learned a fundamental truth about God’s character (that God is trustworthy), but he has also learned the meaning of the word faithful.

Parents' Guide

Dear Mom and Dad,

If you have children that are older (ages 7 to 10) and may enjoy learning more about David, help them understand the following questions. You may want to help your child write his answers in a journal.

What we will learn
• God is faithful.
• We can trust God at all times.
• We can apply the Bible to our everyday lives.
HOW TO APPLY WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT DAVID
  • When David was a little boy, he had to do chores like tending the sheep.

Journal: What chores do you have to do?

We don’t know for sure, but it is possible that David might not have liked all of his chores. When you have to do chores or tasks that you don’t like, you can change the way you think of them. Instead of complaining about the chores you have been given to do, you can consider yourself special. You are so special to your parents and teachers that they trust you with certain jobs, tasks, and chores.

Journal: Write a prayer thanking God for the chores you have been given to do. Tell your parents and teachers "thank you" for trusting you with special jobs.

David’s chores prepared him for battle in many ways:

1) He learned to fight well.

2) He learned to trust God to help him.

Journal: When God gives us small jobs to do, he is many times preparing us to do larger–tougher–jobs. What small things has God helped you learn to do well?

Life Lessons from David:
  • God gives us small jobs to prepare us for big jobs later.
  • When we are faithful with small jobs, God will give us big jobs to do.
  • God never gives us a job to do without helping us to do it.
  • The more we trust God to help us with small things, the more we will trust Him with big things, too.

Journal: Is there something you had to trust God to help you do recently?

Journal: Even when others laughed at him or thought he was crazy to fight with rocks instead of weapons, David trusted God to help him fight the giant. And God helped him. Write about a time when you, or someone you know, believed God even when other people didn’t. Write a prayer thanking God for helping you–or your friend–trust Him.

Memory Verse: "The Lord who saved me from the claws and teeth of the lion and the bear will save me from this Philistine." (1 Samuel 17:37).

Remember Rhyme

David was a small boy
Who believed what God had said;

He knew his God would help him
Save the sheep from being dead.

David fought the giant
That made the army afraid;

He asked God for His help
In the decision he had made.

David trusted the Lord
And the Lord did help him win;

Goliath lost the battle
Because David was God’s friend.

Learning Concepts and Unfamiliar Words

Not only has your child learned a fundamental truth about God’s character (that He is faithful to equip His children for every task), but he has also learned the importance of trusting God. Your child has also had a chance to apply biblical truths to his life and remember the story of David and Goliath through Scripture and song.
