Jesus Turns Water into Wine
John 2:1-12
Water into Wine

Jesus had just chosen special men to follow Him and be His friends. Two days later, Jesus and His new friends went to a wedding, or a celebration kind of like a birthday party–except it's a party for a man and woman who are getting married.

Jesus' mother Mary, whom He loved very much, was also at the wedding in the town of Galilee. Mary came to her Son, Jesus, and told Him about a problem: Just like a birthday party usually has cake, a wedding in Jesus' time usually had a special drink called wine. But the guests, or people at the wedding, drank the wine, and it was all gone. Mary asked Jesus for His help. He answered, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come" (John 2:4).

Even though Mary did not understand Jesus' answer, she told the servants, or helpers, to listen to Jesus and do what He said.

On the table, there were six jugs used for holding water. Jesus told the servants to fill each jug with water. Then, He asked them to dip a cup into the jug and take some of the drink to the man who was in charge of the wedding.

(The servants knew that Jesus had turned the water into wine, but the man in charge did not know it.)

The man in charge drank some of the drink and said to the man getting married, "This is wonderful stuff! You're different from most. Usually a host uses the best wine first, and afterwards, when everyone is full and doesn't care, then he brings out the [kind of wine that is not that good]. But you have kept the best for the last!" (John 2:10 TLB).

This was the very first miracle, or event that seems impossible to explain, that Jesus ever did. His new friends now believed that He was sent by God to save the world from their sin, or the bad things we think about, do, and say.

After the wedding, Jesus went with His mother, brother, and friends to a different city called Capernaum.

Memory Verse:
"' . . . But you have kept the best for the last!'" (John 2:10 NLT).

Remember Rhyme

Jesus went to a wedding

And the wine was all gone

His mother, Mary, came to Him

To tell Him what was wrong.

Jesus answered Mary,

"My time has not yet come,"

Mary did not understand

But listened to her Son.

She told the servants to obey

What Jesus told them to do

They filled six jugs with water

And Jesus made wine new.
